Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency Update
As part of the Saunders v. UIA class action lawsuit, Judge Brock Swartzle of the Michigan Court of Claims approved an order temporarily stopping UIA from collecting on certain restitution owed to the agency. The pause, affecting claims going back to March 1, 2020, was in place until the judge signed off on a $55 million settlement in the case. Under the agreement, UIA is resuming collections and agreed to refrain from collecting any overpayments until all protest or appeal rights have been exhausted. These payments will resume September 29, 2025.

Unemployment Insurance is a government social safety net administered by the UIA under the direction of The Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. Being that this program is administered by the government and not a contractually bargained benefit, UAW representatives cannot affect issues with unemployment.
